Mac users, the new version of Redsnow (0.9.9b5) has been released for you. Follow the linkHERE to download it. The new version makes jailbreaking much easier. Windows users should follow the instructions below for the time being.
Only a short time ago Apple released iOS 5 to the general public in a downloading fiasco that is still crippling servers. If you’re holding off upgrading and waiting for a jailbreak wait no longer. It’s here! The final release of iOS 5 can be jailbroken using Redsnow 0.9.9b4.
The final release of iOS 5 is exactly the same IPSW as iOS 5 GM, so Redsnow 0.9.9 beta 4 is still the go-to tool for jailbreaking at the moment. There is an untethered jailbreak ready, we hear, but it has not yet been released to the public. As soon as it is, we’ll be sure to let you know. For now, you can use this method for a tethered jailbreak and get to work customizing your new iOS experience, thanks to the iPhone Dev Team.
Things to Note:
This is a tethered jailbreak.
iPad 2 is not compatible with this jailbreak guide. iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 3G and 4 should work fine. iPad 2 is only jailbreakable untethered on iOS 4.3.3 using jailbreakme.com
Step-by-Step Guide to Jailbreak iOS 5:
Download Redsnow 0.9.9b4 for Windows or Mac and install it.
Download iOS 5 IPSW from Apple.
Start redsn0w and Click the “Extras” on the first screen, then click “select IPSW” to manually point Redsnow to the iOS 5 IPSW you downloaded in step 2 above.
Go back, to the start screen of redsn0w and select ‘Jailbreak’.
Select “Install Cydia” and follow the instructions to enter DFU mode.
Press and hold power and home buttons simultaneously for 10 seconds
Release power button but keep holding home button for 30 more seconds until redsn0w starts the jailbreak process.
Once there, Redsn0w will load the limera1n exploit to tether-jailbreak your iOS device on iOS 5 GM.
Your device will boot with Cydia installed but it won’t run. Don’t worry, you need to boot tethered.
Boot iOS 5 into Tethered Jailbreak
Start redsn0w 0.9.9 beta 4, select ‘Extras’ like above and ‘select IPSW’ to point to iOS 5 IPSW file.
Don’t go back, just click ‘Just Boot’ from the same ‘extras’ screen and your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch will boot into a jailbreak state without any problem. Enjoy!
